About the role

The Graduate Student Library Assistant provides essential support to the Patent & Trademark Resource Center, assisting with communication management, resource maintenance, data collection, and supervising research-lab hours. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented individual interested in gaining experience in academic-library operations or intellectual property.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the departmental phone and email account, ensuring timely review of incoming messages and forwarding inquiries to the appropriate representative.
  • Assist with scheduling research consultations, workshops, and instructional sessions.
  • Provide support for library events and programs, including planning and logistics.
  • Assist with collection-development tasks, such as ordering books and other materials for designated subject areas.
  • Prepare and distribute departmental communications (announcements, newsletters, updates).
  • Collaborate with librarians to develop instructional content, including tutorials and online modules.
  • Maintain existing online research guides for Intellectual Property subject areas, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and usability.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a University of Tennessee graduate student in Information Sciences, Business, Law, or a closely related program.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with information and technology resources, including databases, internet search tools, online design tools, and standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Canva).

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with LibGuides or similar platforms for creating and maintaining research guides.
  • Event planning or coordination experience in an academic or professional setting.
  • Interest in intellectual property or entrepreneurship resources.

Pay

$14 per hour
