Graduate STEM Technical Editor (Contingent II)
Non-Regular Fixed Term position within the BSU Graduate Resource Center.
About the role
The Graduate Research Center invites applications for a full-time STEM Graduate Technical Editor. The successful candidate will work with graduate students to support their development in academic writing, providing individual feedback and editorial recommendations to improve technical documents, research papers, articles, and other STEM-related content. The role involves ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence in written materials, adhering to specific style guides, and facilitating clear communication of complex technical information. The editor will also collaborate with faculty to ensure consistency and quality of written materials for courses and publications.
Responsibilities
- Develop relationships with faculty and program directors to establish ideal approaches for meeting students’ writing needs, serving a diverse community including non-native English speakers.
- Meet with graduate administration to align writing styles and corrections with BSU Graduate School writing guidelines.
- Ensure successful completion of student documents by organizing writing assignments according to established conciseness, style, and terminology.
- Maintain a project log of documents, records, and files, and collaborate with other staff members as part of a team.
- Review and edit technical documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, and adherence to style guidelines (e.g., APA, IEEE, Chicago).
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in terminology, data, factual information, and logical flow of content.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to verify technical accuracy, cross-reference data, calculations, and experimental results.
- Apply appropriate formatting and style guidelines to standardize headings, tables, figures, and references.
- Assist in developing and structuring technical content for clarity and readability, providing constructive feedback to students and faculty.
- Manage multiple editing projects simultaneously, coordinating with students, faculty, and stakeholders to meet deadlines.
- Conduct final reviews to ensure documents meet quality standards before publication.
- Implement and maintain best practices for technical editing and documentation.
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including scientists, engineers, and IT professionals, to understand project requirements.
- Deliver graduate student writing services and resources, such as writing workshops and dissertation editing services.
- Stay current with best practices in graduate education and student services through conferences, workshops, and professional networking.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics); terminal degree (PhD) preferred.
- 5 years of experience in a professional position focused on writing, editing, and formatting academic materials.
- Experience with reference management tools (e.g., EndNote, Zotero) is a plus.
- Prior experience in academic editing or publishing is preferred.
- Strong command of the English language, with excellent grammar and writing skills.
- Proven experience in technical writing or editing.
- Familiarity with various style guides (e.g., APA, IEEE, Chicago).
- Proficiency in using editing tools and software (e.g., MS Word, LaTeX, Adobe Acrobat).
- Strong understanding of academic writing conventions and research methodologies.
- Attention to detail and ability to work with complex technical information.
- Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to communicate effectively with a diverse population.

$75,000–$85,000 per year.
