About the Role

This Graduate Assistantship is designed to provide a learning experience for those interested in pursuing a career in coaching or college athletics. The role involves assisting in day-to-day team operations and requires working nights, weekends, and holidays. The position also supports the institution’s Catholic identity and mission to empower graduates to transform society, fostering oneness, celebrating life, forming right relationships, and walking as compassionate companions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with coaching staff and team members to assist with team operations
  • Assist the head coach in planning and running team training sessions
  • Prepare scouting reports
  • Aid in recruiting and retention efforts
  • Coordinate travel planning and scheduling
  • Coordinate mentoring, tutoring, or other assistance needed by athletes
  • Maintain professional and ethical conduct at all times
  • Develop and demonstrate a working knowledge of NCAA compliance rules
  • Complete all University-required trainings, including FERPA and Title IX
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Newman Athletics Department by performing other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Must be accepted and enrolled full time (at least six (6) credit hours per semester) in a Master’s degree program during the academic year (fall and spring semesters)
  • Previous experience in a college athletic setting
  • Genuine interest in and willingness to work with students, with an understanding of student attitudes, concerns, and problems
  • Ability to exercise basic human relations skills in directing and motivating staff and dealing with varied constituencies on and off campus
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • AED and/or CPR training preferred
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Pay

  • $3,000.00 stipend paid over 12 months
  • 121 declining meal plan (meals only offered when the dining hall is open for traditional students)
  • Eligible for fall, spring, and summer tuition waiver (student is responsible for payment of books, general fees, parking, and living expenses)

Schedule

This is a 12-month position designed to run over the course of a graduate degree program, with enrollment of 6 credit hours per semester.

Additional Information

  • Graduate Assistants for Athletics may not hold other full-time employment. Other part-time employment in or outside the University must receive prior approval from the Director of Athletics.
  • Tuition remission scholarships are dependent upon enrollment in courses by regular, tuition-paying students. The university reserves the right to move classes from face-to-face to online modality to ensure minimum class size.
  • Tuition remission does not guarantee course availability in any modality; enrollment is based on registration order.
  • The Graduate Assistant must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 to remain in good academic standing.
  • A criminal background check will be performed prior to employment.
