Graduate Administrative Assistant - English Department - Writing Center (Summer 2026 - Fall 2026)
About the Role
Writing consultants hold interactive writing appointments with student writers from all disciplines on various writing projects such as essays, speeches, proposals, and multimodal projects. Consultants develop key skills such as communication, cooperation, and leadership, and may specialize in types of writing and citation styles.
A Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA) under the supervision of faculty and/or staff may assist with academic support duties, departmental operational needs, and other assigned clerical tasks. Positions are filled based on applicant skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.
Responsibilities
- Complete up to 20 hours of face-to-face/online tutoring per week during the semester/term.
- Complete assigned training.
- Work with writers during any step of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing.
- Work with writers from various departments within the university.
- Guide writers through sentence-level grammatical revisions when necessary.
- Guide writers through necessary citation methods.
- Guide writers through developing various multimodal projects (e.g., posters, infographics, presentations, speeches, blogs, video essays).
- Maintain basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Assist with Writing Center social media.
- Be positive and encouraging to student writers.
- Follow guidelines and procedures set by the Writing Center Coordinator.
- Behave in an ethical and professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Keep accurate records of student consultations.
- Assist students in scheduling appointments as needed.
- Assist in training new consultants as needed.
- Attend meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
- Develop materials and resources for the website.
- Perform additional duties as required by the department.
Requirements
- Must be classified as a degree-seeking graduate student at JSU.
- Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at JSU during the assistantship semester.
- If a new student, must be admitted to a degree program.
- Must be actively enrolled in required coursework toward the degree.
- The Graduate Assistantship will not pay for courses that are not in the degree program plan of study/checklist.
- If required to take undergraduate courses for the graduate degree (foundation courses, undergraduate deficiency courses, etc.), the Graduate Assistantship will only pay for these courses if documented as required via memo from the student’s advisor to the Director of Graduate Studies.
- Must hold the minimum required GPA for the enrolled degree program.
- Must be enrolled in six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a fall or spring semester or six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a full summer term (May, June, and July). Exceptions may be made by the Director of Graduate Studies under specific circumstances.
- Must not be holding another campus job.
- A graduate assistant is prohibited from accepting other forms of tuition scholarships or waivers from the University, except for external scholarships and JSU employee tuition assistance.
- If previously held a Graduate Assistantship at JSU, must have fulfilled all duties and complied with all policies.
- Must complete FERPA training, Sexual Harassment training, and other required training through JSU.
Qualifications
- Understanding of the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays.
- Good understanding of grammar and mechanics.
- Knowledge of various rhetorical modes and types (e.g., literary reviews, analyses, blogs, websites, presentations) is beneficial.
International Students
- Must be certified by the Director of the International House and Programs to perform duties and receive compensation.
- Must be in a valid immigration status.
- Must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess:
- Passport from their respective country.
- F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
- Official photo identification.
- Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.

Pay
$8.25 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week over 16 weeks. Pay is disbursed biweekly based on hours worked.
In addition to the hourly rate, Graduate Assistantships include a scholarship each semester up to $4,386.00, covering general university fees and tuition. Students are responsible for additional fees such as international, program, and course fees. Students in specialty priced programs may owe a remaining balance after the scholarship award.
