Graduate Administrative Assistants (GAAs) in the College of Education & Professional Studies support faculty and staff by collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, assisting with special projects, and performing other assigned duties. Positions are filled based on applicant skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.

Pay

  • $8.25 per hour for up to 20 hours per week during fall or spring semesters (16 weeks) or a full summer term (May, June, and July).
  • Biweekly payroll based on hours worked; students must clock in and out for each shift.
  • Scholarship of up to $4,386.00 per semester covering general university fees and tuition. Students are responsible for additional fees (international, program, course, etc.) and any remaining balance for specialty-priced programs.

Schedule

  • 20 hours per week during fall or spring semesters or a full summer term (May, June, and July).

Responsibilities

  • Assist administrative staff with collecting, organizing, and analyzing various types of data or information.
  • Support special projects as assigned by the department.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the unit’s supervisor, faculty, or staff.

Requirements

  • Must be classified as a degree-seeking graduate student at JSU and actively enrolled in a graduate degree program during the assistantship semester.
  • New students must be admitted to a degree program.
  • Must be enrolled in required coursework toward the degree; the assistantship will not cover courses outside the approved plan of study unless documented as required (e.g., foundation or deficiency courses) via memo from the student’s advisor to the Director of Graduate Studies.
  • Must hold the minimum required GPA for the enrolled degree program.
  • Must be enrolled in 6–9 graduate semester hours during fall or spring semesters, or 6–9 graduate semester hours during the full summer term (May, June, and July). Exceptions may be granted by the Director of Graduate Studies for:
    • Students required to take undergraduate courses for their graduate degree (documentation required).
    • Students needing fewer than 6 graduate hours to complete their degree.
    • Graduate Teaching Assistants during summer term, if enrolled in required courses.
  • Must not hold another campus job.
  • Cannot receive other tuition scholarships or waivers from the university (external scholarships and JSU employee tuition assistance are permitted).
  • If previously employed as a Graduate Assistant at JSU, must have fulfilled all prior duties and complied with policies.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistants are discouraged from teaching and taking classes during the same summer term unless approved by their advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.
  • Must complete FERPA training, Sexual Harassment training, and other required training through JSU.
  • International students must:
    • Be certified by the Director of the International House and Programs to perform duties and receive compensation.
    • Be in valid immigration status and enrolled full-time at JSU.
    • Possess a passport, F-1 or J-1 Student Visa, official photo ID, and a Social Security Card with a "Valid for Work Only" statement.
  • Note: The tuition scholarship may affect eligibility for federal financial aid; students are responsible for determining any impact.
