About the role
The Student Services Assistant, under the supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator, assists with the coordination and implementation of direct services for Native American youth, preschool through 12th grade. The position involves reinforcing learning, providing additional skill-building activities, and promoting learning through various educational, cultural, and recreational activities.
Responsibilities
- Develops program activities, recognition events, and recruits program participants.
- Supervises group activities and monitors participants.
- Enforces program policies and procedures.
- Teaches rules, techniques, and skills of educational, cultural, and recreational activities.
- Aids in establishing and completing goals consistent with the Youth Education and Activities Program goals.
- Organizes supplies and resources and ensures the facility is consistent with established policy.
- Maintains complete and accurate records regarding students' participation, subjects studied, communication/correspondence with parents and/or teachers, and progress throughout the program.
- Provides practice tools/activities and guidance to reinforce material or skills previously introduced by the classroom teacher or parent.
- Assists with keeping the program van clean and alerts the Youth Services Coordinator of vehicle maintenance needs.
- Transports program participants in company vehicles.
- Aids in providing incentive and recognition activities for students.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s Degree, Trade, or Technical Certification in Education preferred.
- Minimum of one-year experience working with youth required.
- Must obtain Chauffeur’s License certification within 60 days of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
- Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
- Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.
- Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Must have math, English, and reading skills.
- Must be self-motivated.
- Must have time management skills preferred.
- Must have conflict resolution, negotiation, and interpersonal skills preferred.
- Must have organizational skills preferred.
- Knowledge of Native American History & Tradition is preferred.
- Must have excellent verbal skills, exhibit a friendly and positive attitude, and establish and maintain effective public relations with co-workers, supervisors, and guests.
- Must have excellent communication skills and communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email.
- Must have physical and emotional endurance to work with youth for long periods while maintaining control and a pleasant atmosphere.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
- Must maintain confidentiality.
- Native American preferred.
