The Government Accounting & Advisory Manager will oversee the preparation of financial documents, reports, and schedules for government clients. This role includes leadership, compliance and quality control, reporting and communication, process improvement, and research and technical expertise. They will ensure all preparation work meets the highest standards and aligns with regulatory requirements, and will play a key role in business development and practice growth.
Responsibilities
- Leadership: Manage the government financial reporting & consulting team, including senior associates and staff; provide guidance, support, and training; serve as a coach as needed; oversee delegation of tasks; monitor progress and adjust resources.
- Compliance and Quality Control: Ensure all financial reporting and consulting work complies with applicable accounting standards, governmental regulations, and firm policies; review and validate financial documents for accuracy and completeness; implement and enforce quality control procedures; conduct regular reviews of department processes.
- Reporting and Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients regarding government financial reporting & consulting services; maintain clear communication to address inquiries, provide updates, and resolve issues; provide proactive communication to clients and firm leadership on engagement status, timelines, risks, and outcomes.
- Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in processes; develop strategies to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness; implement best practices and innovative solutions; lead initiatives to adopt new technologies and methodologies.
- Research and Technical Expertise: Stay current on governmental accounting standards, regulations, and industry trends; apply knowledge to ensure compliance and enhance service quality; conduct research and provide technical expertise on complex accounting issues; offer solutions and recommendations based on analysis and best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent required.
- Five or more years’ prior work experience in public accounting or industry equivalent.
- Prior experience with Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB’s) is preferred.
- Prior significant supervisory experience.
- Licensed CPA or international equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with assurance applications and research tools appropriate for this level.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Windows, Word, Excel, Adobe, and PowerPoint.
- Sound Governmental GAAP experience.
- Proven verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent people development and delegation skills, including training/instruction and engagement scheduling and budgeting.
- Executive presence; ability to be primary client contact, prepare and present presentations to clients and potential clients.
- Strong client development and relationship-building skills.
- Solid decision-making skills; ability to resolve complex accounting issues.
- Responsibility for business development and marketing.
- Responsibility for engagement profitability, including billings and collections.
