About the role

The Wheaton Park District is seeking an Assistant Golf Course Mechanic to assist the Golf Course Mechanic in implementing the comprehensive preventive maintenance program for the Arrowhead Golf Club. This position involves repairing equipment, maintaining records, ordering supplies, and assisting with various maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Purchase, maintain, and oversee manual and computer inventory of supplies, equipment, and records.
  • Maintain and operate accurate equipment log.
  • Aid in the maintenance, inspection, repair, and renovation of vehicles, mowers, and other ground equipment.
  • Aid in training and inputting into training procedures for all golf course equipment.
  • Perform arc, acetylene, and mig welding procedures.
  • Identify quality of cut between dull blades, scalping, stragglers, and tire tracks.
  • Adjust green's mowers HOC daily.
  • Adjust tee mowers HOC after mowing.
  • Adjust fairway mowers HOC after and during mowing.
  • Aid with reel & bed knife grinding.
  • Aid with relief grinding, back lapping, HOC, BHOC, and attitude of the bed knife.
  • Aid with establishment, maintenance, and implementation of a preventive maintenance schedule for all vehicles and equipment and report damage and abuse.
  • Aid with distribution and recycling of used oil, solvents, hazardous materials, and other waste products generated on the job.
  • Aid with mowing and/or snow removal.
  • Aid in the maintenance of golf carts.
  • Wear personal protective equipment for job functions when needed.
  • Maintain timely two-way verbal and written communication with supervisors and operators about recurring mechanical problems and concerns.
  • Contribute to a feedback-rich environment.
  • Provide a high-quality of customer service in a professional manner to both internal and external customers.
  • Follow the Wheaton Park District and Arrowhead policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Proactively support the District's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school graduate or GED plus at least two (2) years’ experience in auto repair or maintenance related field and/or trade school completion/certification required.
  • Working knowledge includes light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses; maintaining reel-type mowers including equipment used to sharpen reel blades and bed knives; diesel and gasoline engines and repairs; arc, acetylene, and mig welding procedures; and use of automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Must have great problem-solving, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have: valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; and CPR/AED certified or obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Equipment specific certifications are desirable.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Frequently position oneself to repair equipment, with repetitive use of hands/arms, grasping, and hand/eye coordination when working with tools.
  • Occasionally climb onto equipment, and stairs/ladder, work with vibrating equipment and tools, move equipment, tools, etc. weighing up to 50 lbs. and items over 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Move over uneven ground.
  • Drive a vehicle and operate all golf maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Work long hours during peak season.
  • Frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles; potential toxic items; grease and oil; moving mechanical parts; and occasional vibration.
  • Sometimes exposed to extreme weather conditions and insects; loud noise levels of running equipment; and slippery surfaces.

Hours may vary based on the needs of the facility.
