Global Strategic Sourcing Manager - Lab Equipment
About the role
Reporting to the Manager - Global Strategic Sourcing, this role will lead the development and execution of category plans for the UL Solutions enterprise related to Laboratories, capital equipment sourcing, and projects—with a primary focus on North America. This is a full-time, hybrid (3 days in-office) position located in Northbrook, IL or Chicago, IL.
Responsibilities
- Develop Category Plans and sourcing strategies for a portfolio of key initiatives in laboratory and equipment procurement projects.
- Manage all aspects of Sourcing processes through the lifecycle, including Budget, RFI/RFQ/RFP, complex global negotiations, contracts, and execution of MSAs across varying spend levels.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and single point of contact for the business and suppliers from design through implementation phases of global laboratory footprint projects (expansions, greenfield sites, relocations, etc.).
- Drive key supplier relationships, lead negotiations independently, achieve cost savings, and manage risks.
- Manage the project pipeline and maintain a standardized cadence of business reviews for the supply base within the category.
- Build relationships with key business stakeholders across COUs/Segments, Integrated Labs, Lab Operations, Finance, and other enterprise areas to engage strategic sourcing and act as a trusted advisor.
- Lead key sourcing initiatives to achieve best value within acceptable risk.
- Drive internal process improvements and toolset implementation within the global sourcing organization.
- Develop and maintain a Preferred Supplier Base and Approved Equipment List, rationalize suppliers, and reduce fragmentation to simplify the supplier landscape and drive commercial efficiency globally.
- Ensure key suppliers meet contractual obligations, initiatives perform against business cases, and resolve issues or disputes in a timely manner.
- Build and enhance relationships with strategic suppliers to deliver high service levels while maintaining best-in-class commercial terms.
- Drive adherence to Global Sourcing policy and process enforcement across the UL Solutions enterprise.
- Perform other duties as directed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience developing and executing category strategies in large-scale capital equipment procurement, projects, or laboratory build-outs.
- Knowledge of Procurement processes and operations.
- Experience in capital equipment, lab services, EMC/AHL/EIA/BE is preferred.
- Deep knowledge of equipment providers, Lab System Integrators, lab consumables, and the construction management ecosystem.
- Proven ability to solve complex problems and identify innovative solutions.
- Comfortable independently interacting with and presenting to senior leadership, including Director/VP-level executives.
- Ability to work independently with guidance only in the most complex situations and lead functional teams/projects with excellent attention to detail.
- Track record of delivering significant and sustainable cost reductions through effective sourcing strategy development and execution.
- Superior relationship management and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Understanding of best-practice sourcing methodology and a demonstrated track record of working ethically to achieve excellent outcomes.
- Knowledge of standard legal and commercial contracting practices and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and summarize contractual terms for internal clients (Legal, Business, Laboratories, Finance, etc.).
- Hands-on approach to analyzing and interpreting spend data in support of sourcing initiatives and business objectives.
- Strong process management, data assimilation and presentation, organizational, and time management skills.
- Strong proficiency in written and verbal communications.
Pay
The estimated salary range for this position is $115,000–$140,000, based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographical location. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 20% of the base salary.
