About the Role

Devex is looking for a reporter who can help us cover global development from an insider perspective. It's one of the most consequential beats in the world today, and we need a reporter who can quickly develop sources and grow their expertise in this dynamic area. This full-time position is based in Washington, D.C. You should understand that our coverage of the global development industry is about the people and organizations that shape the sector, and you should expect to develop sources across NGOs, implementing partners, contractors, social enterprises, philanthropic foundations, international organizations, and U.S. government agencies. This is a role for a shoe-leather reporter who will be meeting with sources, attending events, conducting interviews in person, and taking advantage of all the opportunities that D.C. has to offer as a hub of global development.

What You'll Do

You will report on the inside story of the global development industry — tracking which organizations received funding, covering institutional shakeups, and unpacking for our audience the people that are driving change in this space. In this high-octane role, you'll be writing newsletters and exclusive stories from an insider's perspective, and you'll share your journalism on podcasts and on the Devex stage.

Your first year will look a little bit like this…

  • In your first 90 days, you'll get to know the leading NGOs, contractors, social enterprises, philanthropies, MDBs, and government officials shaping this space, while building a strong pipeline of inside sources across the sector.
  • You'll stay on top of breaking news, begin producing sharp analysis, and start developing the relationships needed to land exclusive reporting.
  • You'll also build a strong understanding of your role within the wider Devex editorial team, working collaboratively with colleagues across beats — from impact investing to development finance to climate — as well as with production, events, and audience teams.
  • By the end of your first year, you'll have established yourself as a trusted voice in the global development industry, with a robust network of sources.
  • You'll be delivering a steady stream of exclusive, agenda-setting stories and helping to shape Devex's coverage of major industry trends and debates.
  • You'll also work to help hit our KPIs, which include increasing the number of Pro paid subscribers and newsletter opens.
  • You'll be open to feedback during regular performance reviews.
  • And your reporting will help grow Devex's influence, readership, and subscriber base — while shaping conversations in the global health community.

Required Qualifications

  • At least several years of substantial experience as a reporter
  • Source network that demonstrates you can build sources in this space
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage directly with readers
  • Native command of English – both written and spoken
  • A bachelor's degree

Nice-to-Haves

  • Global development experience and expertise
  • Experience working at a well-respected media organization
  • Comfort moderating panels, hosting podcasts, or speaking publicly
