About the role
The GIS Specialist - Utility Mapping, Data Quality & Data Acceptance Testing plays a critical role in maintaining accurate and reliable utility asset data through mapping, validation, and quality assurance activities. This position supports complex data integration initiatives by reviewing and validating datasets from multiple sources, including GIS platforms, engineering records, and field data.
Responsibilities
- Execute GIS editing, data remediation, and maintenance activities for electric utility assets.
- Update and maintain spatial and attribute data according to established standards, workflows, and quality requirements.
- Execute Data Acceptance Testing (DAT) workflows across integrated and conflated GIS and asset datasets.
- Review and validate data outputs from multiple sources, including GIS, SAP, engineering records, and field-collected information.
- Audit spatial accuracy, attribute completeness, and data consistency resulting from data integration and reconciliation processes.
- Apply QA/QC procedures and acceptance criteria to determine whether datasets meet defined standards.
- Conduct structured sampling and validation reviews to measure overall data quality.
- Identify, document, and categorize defects, inconsistencies, and data quality issues.
- Support root cause analysis related to source system discrepancies, transformation processes, and data workflows.
- Track productivity metrics, including review volumes, cycle times, effort, and task complexity.
- Contribute to reporting on data quality trends, defect rates, and process improvements.
- Validate legacy, field, and third-party data before integration into GIS and related systems.
- Collaborate with program managers, engineering teams, quality teams, and data stakeholders to resolve discrepancies.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, workflow documentation, and best practice development.
Requirements
- An experienced GIS professional with a strong background in utility mapping, spatial data management, and quality assurance processes.
- Technical expertise, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage high-volume data validation activities while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Geospatial Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of professional GIS experience.
- Experience supporting mapping, asset data maintenance, or utility data workflows.
- Experience working in structured QA/QC, data validation, or data acceptance testing environments preferred.
- Proficiency with enterprise GIS platforms, particularly Esri ArcGIS tools, and spatial data editing.
- Experience working with utility infrastructure data, including asset systems and engineering records.
- A strong understanding of geographic data types, including land base, imagery, and utility infrastructure datasets.
- The ability to follow defined workflows, validation standards, and acceptance criteria.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- A high attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality.
- The ability to manage large datasets and production-driven workloads effectively.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Access.
- The ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
