This is a work-as-required, temporary position with no benefits.
About the Role
Performs technical field and office support work for the Information Technology Department in support of a Geographic Information System (GIS) data collection project. Work hours will vary based on project needs and facility access, scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:15 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Performs field data collection at hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and other multi-unit buildings to verify and document room and sub-address information.
- Interprets floor plans, maps, and other reference materials to identify and verify building layouts and address information.
- Marks up paper copies of floor plans and maps to document corrections and updates for incorporation into the County's Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Enters, updates, and verifies spatial and attribute data using GIS software and web-based mapping applications.
- Performs quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and completeness of collected data.
- Uses tablets or other digital devices to collect, verify, and update information in ArcGIS Online (AGOL) web applications.
- Communicates professionally with representatives of participating facilities to obtain information and coordinate field visits.
- Assists with organizing and maintaining field documentation and project records.
- Maintains County equipment assigned for field work, including tablets and related accessories.
- Operates County vehicles to travel to assigned project sites throughout York County.
- Participates in team meetings, training sessions, and departmental initiatives.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent; current enrollment in a college or university program is preferred.
- Experience using computers, tablets, or other digital devices is required.
- Coursework or experience in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ArcGIS Pro, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or a related field is preferred.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include driving record, criminal history, and background checks.
Skills
- Ability to accurately interpret maps, floor plans, and aerial imagery.
- Ability to learn GIS software and web-based mapping applications such as ArcGIS Online.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies in spatial and addressing data.
- Ability to work independently in the field while following established procedures.
- Ability to communicate professionally with property owners, facility staff, and County personnel.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and complete assignments within established timelines.
- Ability to safely navigate multi-story occupied buildings, including frequent walking and stair climbing.
- Proficiency using computers, tablets, Microsoft Office applications, and other digital tools.
- Must be physically able to operate computers, tablets, and other electronic devices.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Visual acuity is required to interpret maps, floor plans, and digital displays.
Physical Demands
- Work requires a combination of office and field activities, including frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, and traveling to facilities throughout the County.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, tablets, printers, copiers, facsimiles, and other mobile devices.
- Physical demand requirements are for those of Moderately Active Work.
