Geotechnical Instrumentation Automation Technician (Part-time)

About the role

Stantec is seeking a field-based Geotechnical Instrumentation Automation Technician on a regular part-time basis to support mining projects in northern New Mexico. This non-exempt position reports through Stantec’s U.S. Energy and Resources team and involves approximately 85% field work. The role requires adherence to project-specific schedules, which may include 12-hour shifts (day or night), travel to remote mountainous locations, and work on short notice. Candidates must be prepared to work safely in high-elevation conditions, seasonal snow, freezing temperatures, and variable summer weather. Travel costs from approved U.S. departure locations will be covered.

Responsibilities

• Follow Stantec and client site-specific Health Safety Environment (HSE) policies to maintain a safe work environment.
• Commission telemetry-enabled automated data acquisition systems for geotechnical and hydrogeological monitoring, including sensor-datalogger integration and connectivity networks.
• Maintain and troubleshoot geotechnical and hydrogeological monitoring programs, including service and calibration work.
• Perform maintenance and diagnostics on automated data acquisition systems.
• Document installation and configuration details for monitoring systems.
• Install, extend, lower, trench, and modify geotechnical and hydrogeological instruments/wells.
• Assist in decommissioning/abandonment of geotechnical instruments and hydrogeological wells.
• Operate light vehicles (4x4 pickups) and/or all-terrain vehicles to access remote instrument locations.
• Engage with stakeholders to gather project background and requirements.
• Install equipment onsite using planned approaches or field-fitting as necessary.

Requirements

• Experience assembling, installing, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting low-voltage automation systems.
• Experience with off-grid power systems (solar panels, battery storage, and electrical components) is an asset.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Experience working around heavy equipment and with hand tools.
• Highly motivated with strong leadership and communication skills.
• Off-road driving experience is an asset.
• Ability to carry 45 lb over 300 ft of rough terrain.
• This position may require pre-access drug and alcohol testing, functional fitness exams, background checks, and other project-specific access requirements.

Qualifications

• Minimum post-secondary technical certification in Mechanical, Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience; experience on mine sites, remote access roads, or mountainous/off-road terrain is an asset.
• Relevant technical certification, professional registration, or industry training in instrumentation, electrical systems, telemetry, or geotechnical monitoring is an asset.

Schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt position with overtime paid in accordance with federal and New Mexico employment requirements. Work schedules are project-specific and may include 12-hour shifts (day or night), with potential for short-notice assignments. Travel to remote field locations is required.
