Geotechnical Engineer – Entry Level (Hybrid)

About the role

Barr is seeking a geotechnical engineer to join their innovative and collaborative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. This hybrid role supports the Engineering and Design business unit, focusing on geotechnical engineering projects through computer modeling, soil and rock investigations, material testing, and instrumentation installation.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous on-site support for construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, surveying, materials testing, and facility inspections.
• Aid in planning, coordinating, and executing projects, ensuring project milestones are met and providing regular updates to project managers and clients.
• Prepare project plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
• Complete design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, earth retention, and dams.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should be intrinsically motivated, emphasize client service, enjoy working independently and as part of a team, and be flexible in scheduling to meet project deadlines and client needs. Relationship-focused, they serve both internal and external clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis, and coursework or research related to mine tailings and tailings storage facilities, dam engineering, or advanced soil mechanics.
• Willingness and ability to regularly travel.
• Software proficiency in geotechnical software programs such as Geostudio, LPile, APile, gINT or BoreDM, or FLAC.
• Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Technical analysis and report writing abilities.

Knowledge of geotechnical principles and practices.

Ability to work in rough terrain and with limited accessibility.

Schedule

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement with occasional visits to the Barr office. The role may be based out of Barr's Bismarck, North Dakota, office with the expectation to visit the office location at least one day per month. Up to 75% domestic fieldwork with an average of 5–10 days continuous job site presence.
