Geotechnical Engineer – Entry Level – 2+ years (Hybrid)
About the role
Barr is seeking a geotechnical engineer to join their innovative and collaborative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. The role is hybrid, supporting the Engineering and Design business unit.
Responsibilities
- Support the Engineering and Design business unit by completing geotechnical engineering projects through geotechnical computer modeling, soil and rock investigations, material testing, and instrumentation installation.
- Provide continuous on-site support for construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, surveying, materials testing, and facility inspections.
- Aid in project planning, coordination, and execution, ensuring project milestones are met and providing regular updates to project managers and clients.
- Prepare project plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
- Complete design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, earth retention, and dams.

Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis, and coursework or research related to mine tailings and tailings storage facilities, dam engineering, or advanced soil mechanics.
- Experience: 2 years of relevant experience.
- Willingness and ability to regularly travel.
Skills
Software proficiency in geotechnical software programs such as Geostudio, LPile, APile, gINT or BoreDM, or FLAC.
Benefits
Compensation: Anticipated range of $75,000–$95,000 annually, with a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Classified as Exempt, Salaried under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Work location: Hybrid work arrangement may be considered, with the possibility of visiting the Barr office location at least one day per month.
Travel expectation: Up to 75 percent domestic fieldwork, with an average of 5–10 days continuous job site presence.
Work environment: Ability to work in locations featuring rough terrain typical of construction sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Pay
$75,000–$95,000 annually, with compensation varying based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
