Geotechnical Engineer

About the role
This position provides geotechnical engineering support for high-voltage electric transmission and power delivery projects. The role applies geotechnical principles to evaluate, design, and construct foundations and other project components, ensuring safe, reliable, constructible, and cost-effective solutions. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting infrastructure, utility, or transmission projects and will collaborate closely with civil, structural, transmission, construction, and project management teams.
Responsibilities
- Perform geotechnical investigations, field evaluations, and site assessments for transmission and power delivery projects.
- Develop and review geotechnical reports, engineering calculations, recommendations, and design documentation.
- Evaluate subsurface conditions and provide recommendations for transmission structure foundations and other civil infrastructure.
- Support foundation design, including evaluation of bearing capacity, settlement, lateral capacity, uplift, and other geotechnical considerations.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, transmission, and construction teams to develop practical and constructible foundation solutions.
- Review soil and laboratory testing data and interpret geotechnical information for design applications.
- Provide geotechnical input for project development, cost estimates, schedules, and design decisions.
- Support constructability reviews and provide recommendations to address field and construction challenges.
- Review contractor submittals, respond to technical questions, and provide engineering support during construction as needed.
- Ensure geotechnical designs and recommendations comply with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate technical findings and recommendations effectively to project teams, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Travel periodically to project sites, customer meetings, and field investigations as required.
- Perform other duties in support of project and department objectives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
- Minimum 5 years of geotechnical engineering experience, preferably supporting utility, transmission, power delivery, or other heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one preferred.
- Experience with transmission structure foundation design is highly desirable.
Skills
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and foundation design.
- Experience evaluating subsurface conditions, soil properties, bearing capacity, settlement, uplift, and lateral loads.
- Familiarity with geotechnical investigation methods, soil and laboratory testing, and interpretation of field data.
- Knowledge of applicable geotechnical and structural design codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE, ACI, and relevant industry standards.
- Experience with geotechnical analysis and design software preferred.
- Ability to prepare and review technical reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and field locations as required.
Pay
$120,000–$150,000 per year, depending on experience.
