As a Summer Intern in the Ashland, VA office, you will play an integral role in the organization's success and the early formation of your professional career. Interns work under minimal supervision or in collaboration with knowledgeable, dynamic staff on a wide variety of projects. There are two internship levels:
- Level 1 – Freshman and Sophomores: primarily assigned field tasks on construction materials testing projects.
- Level 2 – Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students: mix of Level 1 field tasks plus office assignments working alongside other professionals.
Responsibilities
Level 1 Interns:
- Field observation, sampling, and testing of construction materials
- Clear documentation of results
- Work with materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement
Level 2 Interns:
- All Level 1 field tasks
- Assist in report creation
- Soil classification
- Other technical roles as directed by a professional
Requirements
- Reliable vehicle for construction sites, valid driver's license, and satisfactory driving record
- Participation in a pre-employment drug screening and background check
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 60–80 pounds (soil and concrete samples, nuclear gauges, etc.)
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform basic mathematical procedures and use measurement tools
- Civil Engineer (Geotechnical) students highly desirable; other Geology or Engineering disciplines encouraged to apply
Pay
$20.00 – $24.00 per hour
