Geotechnical/CMT Laboratory Technician
Position Summary
The Geotechnical/Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Technician II will perform geotechnical laboratory testing support for various Energy and Renewable Energy projects. Primary responsibilities include: following ASTM testing procedures, reducing laboratory data, performing quality control and assurance procedures.
Essential Job Functions
- Organize, coordinate and work in the geotechnical materials testing laboratory as assigned by the Project and Senior Engineer.
- Review samples and tests with the engineer and field technician.
- Review analytical laboratory data, field and laboratory test results and submit to the engineer for engineering review.
- Set up and calibrate equipment. Ship and receive equipment and samples, periodically.
- Prepare and/or review construction materials testing reports for delivery to the engineer/ project manager.
- Perform field inspections or investigations as needed to ensure support of field investigations and quality assurance (QA) program, ensure QA/QC compliance and support the overall engineering projects.
- Prepare daily reports and assist with proposals for various types of construction materials testing projects.
- Develop Health and Safety Plans (HASP) and excavation plans, submit 811 one calls, and perform other office tasks supporting projects.
- Aid in updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of the laboratory.
- Aid in coordinating with entry-level lab staff including mentorship for test performance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma or GED with experience, Bachelors of Science in Construction Engineering, Civil or Geotechnical/Geological Engineering, Geology or related degree is preferred.
- 2-5 years of related experience in the area of soils testing, construction materials testing, and/work in a soils laboratory.
- Knowledge of ASTM standards for construction, including standard soils testing, construction Material testing.
- Proficient in Microsoft office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of GINT or Open Ground software, preferred.
- ACI certification in the fundamentals of concrete and materials is a plus.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The candidate must be able to walk across rough surfaces that may be muddy and rutted in inclement weather. The candidate must be able to hear warning signals from heavy machinery that is in motion. Some heavy lifting required, including soil samples and equipment lifting.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
- Work will be in the Midland, Texas office/laboratory (80% office, 20% Field).
- Field and Lab/Office time is based on a given year, not every week. Any opportunity to perform field work will primarily be in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico and occasional overnight travel will be required.
- Fieldwork, when required, will be primarily outdoors, exposed to varying weather conditions, while wearing fire-retardant clothing (FRC).
