About the role
Black River Environmental, an environmental consulting firm specializing in investigation and remediation of contaminated sites in the Pacific Northwest region, is seeking a motivated entry-level Geologist or Hydrogeologist, preferably with 0 - 2 years of professional experience, to join our growing team.
Responsibilities
- Participating in field activities at contaminated sites: Support and conduct fieldwork such as environmental drilling, soil logging and sampling, well installation and development, groundwater sampling and aquifer testing, excavation monitoring and construction oversight, operation and maintenance of soil, groundwater, and landfill gas remediation systems, and soil gas sampling.
- Supporting project tasks and coordination: Assist project managers and senior staff with day-to-day project tasks, including field work coordination and preparation, coordination with subcontractors, and preparation of project documentation.
- Analyzing and compiling environmental data: Compile, analyze, and visualize environmental data, including preparing hydrographs, tables, figures, geologic cross-sections, contaminant plume maps, and contributing to the development of conceptual site models.
- Serving as a technical writer and communicator: Support the preparation of technical deliverables such Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments, Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, Cleanup Action Plans, and Remedial Action Reports, with guidance and review from senior staff.
- Collaborating and communicating with project teams: Work alongside project managers, senior technical staff, and teammates to support effective communication with clients, subcontractors, regulators, and other stakeholders.
- Contributing to company initiatives and operations: As time allows and based on your interests, support various internal initiatives and business operations such as graphic design and social media, health and safety program management, diversity and inclusion program development, field equipment maintenance or management, marketing and proposal support, etc.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Geology or Hydrogeology. Prefer coursework with an emphasis in hydrogeology, PNW regional geology, contaminant fate and transport, and field experience.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work remotely, independently, and collaboratively in field and office tasks.
- Path to professional licensure (GIT, LG, LHG) in Washington State.
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and in a variety of conditions and locations.
- Preference may be given to candidates that also meet the following:
- Master’s degree in Geology or Hydrogeology.
- 0 - 2 years of relevant environmental consulting experience.
- Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and First Aid/CPR training.
- Experience with Washington State cleanup regulations (MTCA).

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Schedule
The position is flexible and requires about 75% fieldwork, with variability depending on project needs and seasonality.
