About the role

Barr is seeking a geologist to join our Salt Lake City office. This hybrid role supports the Assessment and Remediation and Water Resources business units on projects related to contaminated sites and water supply development.

Responsibilities

  • Support site investigations, environmental sampling, and data collection using foundational geology/science principles.
  • Assist in the analysis of environmental and hydrogeologic data and contribute to the development of remediation approaches and water supply well designs.
  • Coordinate field activities and logistics, including contractor oversight and equipment preparation.
  • Aid in tracking project progress and documenting key milestones.
  • Evaluate site conditions and identify potential solutions to environmental challenges, applying regulatory knowledge and scientific reasoning.
  • Produce clear field notes, chain-of-custody documents, internal and external client emails, data summaries, figures, and draft report sections.
  • Provide concise status updates to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or geological engineering, or a related degree.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience working on environmental sites or other hydrogeologic site investigations.
  • Training: 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Licenses/certifications: Fundamentals of Geology (FG) certified or ability to obtain certification within one year.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations.

Pay

The anticipated range of compensation is $65,000–$75,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.

Schedule

This position can be based out of Barr's Salt Lake City, Utah office. It is a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a split between an office and home office. Travel expectation is up to 50% travel and 75% fieldwork, with seasonal and project-based adjustments. The work environment includes rough terrain typical of construction sites and limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, stand, walk, kneel, or crouch for extended periods, use PPE as required by site conditions, and safely operate or work around environmental monitoring and sampling equipment.
