About the role

This position operates standard equipment for bathymetric, hydrogeological, and geophysical surveys for field studies at contaminated sites. Equipment includes smaller direct push drilling equipment, grouting machines, small drones, electric and peristaltic pumps, water level meters, skid steers, forklifts, and trucks with trailers for field assignments.

Responsibilities include collecting environmental samples (soil, water, air), compiling associated data, and providing data to senior technicians for technical field reports. The role also involves minor repairs and maintenance of equipment, such as checking and adding fluids, replacing hoses, and changing batteries.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment for bathymetric, hydrogeological, and geophysical surveys.
• Collect environmental samples (soil, water, air) and compile associated data.
• Provide data to senior technicians for inclusion in technical field reports.
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance on field equipment (e.g., checking fluids, replacing hoses, batteries).

Requirements

Education

• Associate’s degree in petroleum technology, earth science, or geology.

Experience

• Geological Technician 8: No specific experience required.
• Geological Technician 9: One year of experience performing geological technician assignments equivalent to a Geological Technician 8.
• Geological Technician E10: Two years of experience performing geological technician assignments, including one year equivalent to a Geological Technician 9.

Alternate Education and Experience

• Four years of experience in well drilling; service/inspections of pumps, tanks, and water systems; soil and water sampling; well maintenance and repair; welding of pipes; or operation of heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, well drilling rig) may substitute for the educational requirement.
• Completion of one year of college (30 semester or 45 term credits) and two years of experience in the fields listed above may also substitute for the educational requirement.
• Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher with 16 semester (24 term) credits in job-specific or related coursework qualifies for the Geological Technician E10 level.

Additional Requirements

• Some positions may require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate designated state vehicles.
• Certain positions may require a criminal history background check.
