About the role

The Genetic Counselor counsels patients and families regarding genetic conditions, genetic testing procedures, and test results. In partnership with the Medical Director and other clinicians, the Genetic Counselor helps patients understand complex genetic information, supports informed decision-making, and coordinates appropriate follow-up care. This role also provides access to resources for medical interventions, grief counseling, and other supportive services as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provides genetic counseling to patients and families based on medical, personal, and family history.
  • Assesses genetic risk and identifies patients who may benefit from genetic testing.

Requirements

  • Graduate Degree, required. Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling or related field.
  • One year of cancer genetic counseling experience, preferred.
  • Board certified or eligible for Genetic Counseling, required. Certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics, required.
  • Possess sufficient knowledge to interpret and discuss genetic test procedures, results, and genetic diseases in terms understandable by patients.
  • Possess management skills to accept responsibility and make decisions.
  • Promote and maintain compatible working relationships among personnel in the section.
  • Communicate well with other health care professionals, patients, and families.
  • Effective communication skills: listening, writing, talking, and reading.
  • Ability to maintain patience and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to organize and plan work.
