Genetic Counselor (Temporary)

About the role

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a temporary full-time Genetic Counselor / Clinical Instructor (HS).

Responsibilities

• Oversight of the development, implementation, and maintenance of the prenatal genetic counseling services.
• Obstetrical genetic risk assessments in collaboration with the Antenatal Testing Unit Director.
• Facilitation of the genetic testing process, including obtaining informed consent and disclosing results to patients.
• Providing genetic testing results, including risk estimates and recommendations to patients and referring providers.
• Collaboration and coordination of patient care with healthcare providers.
• Functioning as a liaison between the Antenatal Testing Unit and genetic testing laboratories to address test orders.
• Adherence to procedures and policies for genetic counseling services at a state-funded inner city hospital.
• Keeping up-to-date with developments in genetics and genomics.
• Attendance at applicable meetings and conferences.

Qualifications

• Board eligible or Board certified Genetic Counselor, preferably with 3+ years of genetic counseling experience.
• Ability to function independently with minimal oversight.
• Professional communication, advice, writing, and consultation skills.
• Good decision-making and judgment skills.
