About the role
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a temporary full-time Genetic Counselor / Clinical Instructor (HS).
Responsibilities
- Oversight of the development, implementation, and maintenance of the prenatal genetic counseling services.
- Obstetrical genetic risk assessments in collaboration with the Antenatal Testing Unit Director.
- Facilitation of the genetic testing process, including obtaining informed consent and disclosing results to patients.
- Providing genetic testing results, including risk estimates and recommendations to patients and referring providers.
- Collaboration and coordination of patient care with healthcare providers.
- Functioning as a liaison between the Antenatal Testing Unit and genetic testing laboratories to address test orders.
- Adherence to procedures and policies for genetic counseling services at a state-funded inner city hospital.
- Keeping up-to-date with developments in genetics and genomics.
- Attendance at applicable meetings and conferences.
Qualifications
- Board eligible or Board certified Genetic Counselor, preferably with 3+ years of genetic counseling experience.
- Ability to function independently with minimal oversight.
- Professional communication, advice, writing, and consultation skills.
- Good decision-making and judgment skills.
