About the role
Legacy Medical Group is seeking a Genetic Counselor Specialist to provide compassionate, ethical communication that respects patient dignity. This is a part-time, benefited, non-exempt position for on-call employees with unpredictable hours and schedules. The role involves direct patient care and patient care coordination for Medical Genetics patients.
Responsibilities
- Provide genetic counseling to patients utilizing the genetic counseling process that recognizes and responds to individual needs; provides current information; and adheres to NSGC guidelines, code of ethics and department protocols
- Provide counseling in a complete, comprehensive, and non-directive manner
- Take family histories, teach genetic concepts, explain risks and benefits of various diagnostic procedures, facilitate a decision making process for clients
- Call lab results and provide supportive, non-directive counseling
- Collect data and assist in the preparation of clinical case plans for patients scheduled for genetic counseling
- Prepare three generation pedigrees; anticipate needs and obtain information for case management, such as medical records
- Conduct literature search as appropriate
- Coordinate care with appropriate departments (e.g. Ultrasound and Lab)
- Provide written and/or verbal communications so that patients and referring care providers have the information to meet their needs
- Provide results of normal tests to families within 24 hours and notify primary care providers of abnormal results within 24 hours
- Maintain communications with families through decision making and resolution
- Write consultation letters within 48 hours after meeting with patients
- Review intake forms and document all verbal communication and correspondence
- Document sessions in letters to referring care providers
- Participate in data collections as directed
- Act as a resource to both hospital and community; develop goals for professional development
- Remain active in professional organizations; provide staff education as requested
Qualifications
- Master's degree in genetic counseling
- Genetic Counselor License required
- ABMG/ABGC certified or board eligible
- Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions
Pay
USD $42.06 - USD $60.14 /Hr.
