About the role

Join our world-class team of genetic counselors at the Center of Genomic Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's. As a Genetic Counselor II, you will deliver comprehensive genetic counseling services to patients and families in accordance with established professional practice guidelines. Clinical responsibilities are generally centered in an assigned practice area, with flexibility to provide clinical coverage across other practice areas based on departmental and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze intake information and determine if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, competency skills, and intervention techniques in genetic counseling clinical services.
  • Assess recurrence risks and recommend medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit, and cost.
  • Ensure proper completion of counseling paperwork.
  • Interact and communicate regularly with the medical geneticist(s) and/or other supervising physician(s).
  • Communicate both normal and abnormal results and coordinate appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
  • Provide crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; make referrals for ongoing care and support.
  • Act as a consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings; work to establish yourself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
  • Provide genetic counseling in accordance with applicable standards of professional care.
  • Attend continuing education courses, meetings, and review medical literature to stay current in the genetic counseling field.
  • Provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
  • Contribute to the quality and development of clinical services, participate in specialty sections, and coordinate specific services or projects.
  • Actively participate in outreach, education, and training activities.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for programs in the Center for Genomic Medicine, as assigned, which may include adult and pediatric patients in general and subspecialty clinics.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in genetic counseling and competency in all genetic counselor core functions required.
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) Certification required upon hire. ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991) may still be considered.
  • California Genetic Counseling License (Full or temporary) required upon hire.
  • Experience in adult genetics and/or pediatric genetics is preferred.
