Responsibilities

• Obtain and assess family and medical history and counsel patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
• Discuss genetic testing process, possible results, and benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
• Obtain informed consent from interested patients.
• Coordinate and research all insurance coverage for genetic testing for patients, including researching the best tests based on patient’s insurance coverage.
• Prepare letters of medical necessity.
• Assist families in understanding genetic disorders in their families; probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist, and recurrence risks.
• Document in patient charts and develop follow-up recommendations for patients; document cases and maintain appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
• Develop and present educational and related programs, and available resources as appropriate.
• Coordinate and support the execution of research protocols as needed; including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
• Perform associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
• Teach and supervise training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals. Scholarly activities are supported and encouraged.

Qualifications

• Must be certified or eligible for ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) certification.
• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required.
• 1-2 years of genetic counseling experience preferred.
