About the role
MedStar Health is looking for a Genetic Counselor to join our team in the Baltimore-Washington metro region, recognized as one of the "Healthiest Maryland Businesses." The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills and will interview and counsel patients at risk for or affected with genetic disorders.
Responsibilities
- Collects genetic information in preparation for each referred patient.
- Explains genetic risks, diagnosis, and available interventions to patients and their family members.
- Supplies pertinent written information to patients and physicians.
- Gathers information and utilizes resources from various sources; calculates or cites empiric genetic risks to each individual patient or family member.
- Provides lectures and educational sessions on genetic counseling and medical genetics issues to residents, staff, and the community.
- Identifies at-risk individuals and offers appropriate tests and referrals to genetic specialists.
- Interviews patients by taking family, medical, and pregnancy histories to identify significant genetic and environmental risk factors.
- Maintains patients' files and records, such as the number of patients counseled and types of referrals, according to departmental and laboratory standards.
- Prepares letters to patients and physicians after counseling sessions.
- Receives referrals, schedules appointments within a week of referral, and logs information with accuracy.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling.
- American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification within one year of hire.
- 2 years of genetic counseling experience preferred.
Pay
This position has a hiring range of USD $74,214.00 - USD $134,596.00 per year.
