Generator Technician I, II (Maintenance Career Path)

Position Description Generator Technician I - Hourly Rate: $ 23.52 - $ 28.89; Generator Technician II - Hourly Rate: $31.81 - 44.63 This posting will be used to fill full time, Safety Sensitive positions in the Generator Technician Proficiency advancement series in the Department of Public Works, in Utility Operations. The proficiency advancement series consists of the positions of Generator Technician I, Generator Technician II, Generator Technician III and Senior Generator Technician. Once hired, employees non-competitively advance through the Generator Technician series by obtaining additional skills and certifications and receiving skill based pay increases. The credentials of each candidate will determine which position classification is most appropriate for a candidate to be selected for. A pre-hire test is conducted prior to an offer of employment in order to determine the candidate's technical skill level and the appropriate rate of pay for the position. The Generator Technician I, Generator Technician II, Generator Technician III, and Senior Generator Technician are differentiated on the basis of skills, certification, licensing, and demonstrated ability to perform specified skills as defined in the Qualifications Standards of the Maintenance Career Program Manual, a separate component of the skill-based EXCEL Flexible Worker Program. Employees in this classification are designated essential employees and must report to work as scheduled under all weather conditions with frequent exposure to outdoor temperatures. Employees may be required to work overtime, holidays, weekends and standby duty. The work of this class requires frequent bending, climbing, stooping, reaching, walking, crawling in tight spaces such as generator and switchgear enclosures and lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds. Examples Of Duties And Knowledge, Skills And Abilities GENERATOR TECHNICIAN I: This is Generator Technician work at the entry level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves the performance of basic level preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on engine-driven emergency power generation systems and related electrical equipment installed to support the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. Work involves responsibility for performance of a variety of basic maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of stationary and mobile engine-driven emergency power generation systems installed in wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but may include some minor electrical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of basic preventative maintenance tasks, performance testing of engine-driven emergency power generation systems, performance of basic corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks on emergency power generation systems. Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety. GENERATOR TECHNICIAN II: This is Generator Technician work at the II (intermediate) level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves the performance of intermediate level preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on engine-driven emergency generators and related electrical equipment utilized to support the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. Work involves responsibility for performance a variety of intermediate maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of stationary and mobile engine-driven emergency generators utilized in wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some electrical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of basic preventative maintenance tasks, performance testing of emergency power generator systems, performance of intermediate corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks on emergency power generation systems. Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety. GENERATOR TECHNICIAN III: This is Generator Technician work at the III (advanced) level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves the performance of advanced level preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on engine-driven emergency power generation systems and related electrical equipment installed to support the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. Work involves responsibility for performance of a variety of advanced maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of stationary and mobile engine-driven emergency power generation systems installed in wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some electrical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of advanced preventative maintenance tasks, performance testing of emergency power generation systems, performance of advanced corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks on emergency power generation systems. Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor and serving as the lead worker of small work groups. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety. SENIOR GENERATOR TECHNICIAN: This is Generator Technician work at the most advanced (master) level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves serving in a lead role in the preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on engine-driven emergency power generation systems and related electrical equipment installed to support the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. The work also includes the administrative and lead worker duties associated with a multi-person maintenance work center. Work involves serving in the lead role in the repair and maintenance tasks within the capabilities of the maintenance work center that support the efficient, reliable and safe operation of stationary and mobile engine-driven emergency power generation systems installed in wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes electrical duties. Work assignments include leading all preventative and predictive maintenance tasks, performance testing of emergency power generation systems and leading advanced corrective maintenance on emergency power generation systems. Work at this level includes the training of lower level workers and the administrative and lead worker duties associated with a multi-person work center. Minimum Qualifications GENERATOR TECHNICIAN I: Graduation from high school; one (1) or more years experience in the maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines or electrical motors; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. GENERATOR TECHNICIAN II: Graduation from high school; maintenance career certification as a Generator Technician I; two (2) or more years experience in the maintenance and repair of internal combustion engine-driven generator sets and related electrical equipment; and a valid commercial Class A motor vehicle operator's license. NOTE: Candidates that do not possess the Class A Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator's license will have six (6) months from the date of hire to obtain this license which is required for the positions of Generator Technician II, III and Senior. NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol Testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
