About the role

The City of Cedar Park seeks a skilled and experienced Generator Technician to join our dynamic team. This position is essential for ensuring the reliability and readiness of emergency electrical generator systems across the city.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs emergency electrical generators and associated automatic transfer switches.
  • Performs scheduled generator exercise runs and operational tests to verify equipment readiness and proper operation.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on assigned generators, including tune-ups, power-downs, oil sampling and changes, filter replacement, battery checks, and other manufacturer-recommended maintenance.
  • Performs generator loading and load-bank testing as required and documents test results and equipment condition.
  • Maintains accurate service histories and electronic records for assigned generators, including preventive maintenance, exercise dates and run times, testing, repairs, and other equipment information.
  • Inspects generators and related equipment to identify deficiencies, potential failures, and required corrective maintenance.
  • Collaborates with the Utility Foreman to maintain adequate inventories of generator repair parts, materials, and supplies.
  • Assists other sections of the Pump and Motor Controls Department with maintenance and operational activities as assigned.
  • Responds to emergency conditions and participates in special task force activities during floods, storms, hurricanes, power outages, extreme cold weather, and other emergencies.
  • Completes work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, testing documentation, and other required records accurately and timely.
  • Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas and properly stores tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Communicates equipment status, deficiencies, repair requirements, and safety concerns to the Utility Foreman and appropriate City personnel.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, or repairing emergency electrical generators or related electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of emergency electrical generator systems, including diesel-powered and standby generator systems.
  • Basic electrical and mechanical principles applicable to generator operation and maintenance.
  • Preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair practices for generator systems.
  • Electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices around energized equipment.
  • Safe operation of hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, and related maintenance equipment.
  • Computer operations, electronic recordkeeping, data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, and work-order systems.

Skills

  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, starting, charging, and control-system problems.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical instructions.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, and other equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records and documentation.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
  • Prioritize work and respond effectively to emergency conditions.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, vendors, other City employees, and the general public.
  • Work independently with limited supervision while exercising sound judgment.
