About the role

Join the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) team in Trail, where your surgical expertise meets the unique healthcare needs of a diverse and active community. In this vital role, you will address a broad spectrum of surgical cases, reflecting the active lifestyles and diverse needs of our community members.

The position offers a multitude of patient-focused activities, ensuring a diverse and engaging practice.

You will have access to 4 OR days and 4 endoscopy days per month, catering to a wide range of surgical needs. Your foundational expertise in endoscopic procedures is crucial to our team.

Besides your time at KBRH, your skills will be invaluable to Kootenay Lakes Hospital in Nelson, Castlegar and District Community Health Centre, Grand Forks’ Boundary District Hospital, Slocan Community Health Centre, and Arrow Lakes Hospital in Nakusp. You will be instrumental in delivering high-quality care across the region.

Our close collaboration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine offers enriching opportunities to teach 3rd-year medical students. This integration allows you to seamlessly incorporate teaching into your schedule, providing a rewarding balance of professional development and significant contributions to clinical education.

Beyond molding the minds of tomorrow’s medical professionals, your involvement in projects centred around enhancing Physician Quality Improvement (PQI), supported by Doctors of BC, will allow you to drive real change. Responsibilities

  • Perform general surgery and endoscopic procedures
  • Provide perioperative and clinical support
  • Deliver high-quality care across multiple regional sites (Kootenay Lakes Hospital in Nelson, Castlegar and District Community Health Centre, Grand Forks’ Boundary District Hospital, Slocan Community Health Centre, Arrow Lakes Hospital in Nakusp)
  • Teach 3rd-year medical students in collaboration with UBC Faculty of Medicine
  • Participate in Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) initiatives

Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) serves 85,000 residents across the region, offering round-the-clock emergency and trauma care, intensive care, acute medical conditions, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care. Specialized units include ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, plastic surgery, psychiatry, urology, general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, oncology, and internal medicine. The 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART) underscores KBRH’s role as the regional hub for critically ill and injured patients.

Trail and nearby Rossland are surrounded by the Selkirk and Monashee Mountains, with crystal-clear lakes and lush forests. The area offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and golf at courses like Birchbank, Champion Lakes, and Redstone. Winter sports are a highlight, with Red Mountain Resort minutes away. The communities provide affordable real estate and a supportive environment ideal for raising families.

Schedule and flexibility

This role offers flexible scheduling, including the option for part-time hours to support work-life balance. We welcome both full-time and part-time applicants.

Locum opportunity

We are currently seeking locum coverage for approximately 10 days per month from November 2025 to June 30, 2026. This includes hospital-based on-call coverage (24 hours/weekends).

The Rural Specialist Locum Program (RSLP) provides coverage for travel and accommodations when following program guidelines. Depending on journey length, physicians may earn up to $1,560 for travel time costs. The program also reimburses reasonable transportation and lodging expenses as outlined in current policy terms.
