General Orthopedics APP (Ambulatory & Walk-In Clinic)

About the Role

The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is a licensed professional provider who functions in collaboration with an attending physician in a variety of practice settings at YNHHS. Provides exceptional direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care to the highest standards of the organization as part of a multidisciplinary team. Cultivates a patient-centric environment which focuses on the whole individual inclusive of physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and functional needs of the patient, family, and significant others. Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care in patient care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty-specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise.

This is a full-time position supporting both the General Orthopedics Clinic and Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic. The role offers a Monday–Friday schedule with no weekends, holidays, or on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, diagnose, and treat a wide range of general orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions
• Manage patient flow and clinical decision-making in the Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic
• Perform in-office procedures including joint injections, splinting, casting, and wound care (training provided)
• Collaborate closely with orthopedic surgeons, fellow APPs, RNs, medical assistants, and multidisciplinary team members
• Document clinical findings, assessments, and treatment plans accurately and timely in the electronic medical record
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based care pathways
• Provide assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review/order diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulate/manage patient treatment plans
• Perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines
• Function as first or second assistant on operative cases (within scope and job prerequisites)
• Educate patients/families on care, treatment plans, side effects, and discharge instructions
• Provide psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others
• Ensure appropriate documentation and protect patient information in compliance with hospital and regulatory requirements
• Demonstrate high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, and commitment to patient care
• Engage in projects to maintain and advance professional competency
• Serve as a clinical resource, preceptor, and mentor for new staff and students
• Collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects
• Consistently demonstrate high reliability organizational behaviors, including reporting safety events and near misses

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program
• Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License with board specialty certification
• Connecticut State Physician Assistant License or Connecticut State Registered Nurse License
• ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated for position profile)
• DEA License (when indicated for pediatric position profile)
• PALS (when indicated for neonatal care) or NRP Certification, as applicable
• Interest in orthopedics, musculoskeletal medicine, or ambulatory care preferred
• Previous APP orthopedic experience required
• APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process
