General Ophthalmologist and Cataract Surgeon
About the role
CHEC is an NHS provider organisation and the largest provider of community-based ophthalmology services in the UK. We are expanding into Gastroenterology, ENT, and Dermatology services across England. We are seeking employed Ophthalmologists to join our team in CHEC Hospitals and Community Centres, delivering high-quality clinical care in community ophthalmology services.
The post holder will perform a range of ophthalmology appointments and supervise healthcare professionals, working in accordance with CHEC treatment protocols. Responsibilities include:
- General Ophthalmology
- Glaucoma services
- Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) care
- Laser treatment
- Minor eye operations
- High-volume phacoemulsification under topical anaesthesia (if applicable)
Managerial accountability: Hospital Manager. Professional accountability: Clinical Director for Ophthalmology.
Requirements
- UK registered Medical Degree or equivalent
- MRCOphth/FRCOphth/FRCS qualification
- Full or Specialist GMC Registration
- Up-to-date with current medical practice
- Wide training and experience in general ophthalmology
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on general ophthalmology
- Capability to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Understanding of audit and Clinical Governance
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication skills
- Flexible, objective, and assertive
- Good knowledge of and ability to use spoken and written language
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Ability to travel independently to all hospital sites within a region
- Willingness to meet volume and clinical productivity targets
Desirable: Competent independent cataract surgeon.
