About the Role

As a General Merchandise Team Leader, you’ll enable a consistent guest experience by overseeing operations, process, and efficiency in General Merchandise (GM). Teams in GM prioritize guest experience while ensuring product availability and ease of shopping through replenishment, pricing, signing, setting, and maintaining the sales floor and backroom. You’ll also execute inbound, outbound, and fulfillment responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a consistent guest experience by ensuring team members understand and execute Target’s guest experience commitments
  • Observe and provide feedback to team members, holding them accountable while recognizing great guest experiences
  • Review guest, financial, and team outcome metrics to identify opportunities and drive results
  • Lead daily/weekly workload execution (receiving, merchandising, signing, restocking, backroom organization, price changes) to meet sales goals and guest engagement
  • Educate team members on operational procedures and their impact on inventory, profitability, and product availability
  • Assess reporting to identify gaps in GM processes and assist in developing resolution plans
  • Assign tasks based on workload and guest traffic patterns, aligning with business priorities
  • Help establish clear goals and expectations, holding team members accountable
  • Lead pick, pack, and ship fulfillment work accurately and assess reporting to identify gaps
  • Ensure product is in stock, accurately priced, and signed on the sales floor while prioritizing guest experience
  • Collaborate with teams to ensure the store is guest-ready
  • Stay informed about trends and products to educate team members
  • Evaluate candidates for open positions and develop a guest-centric team
  • Model best practices for onboarding, learning, and team interactions
  • Support guest services (back-up cashier, digital fulfillment) while maintaining compliance
  • Demonstrate inclusivity, ethical conduct, and adherence to safety procedures
  • Lead a safety culture by modeling safe behaviors, correcting hazards, and reporting injuries
  • Support merchandise protection strategies and follow security processes
  • Occasionally assume store-level leadership on duty (LOD) responsibilities
  • Address all store emergency and compliance needs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Age 18 or older
  • Previous retail experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to lead and hold others accountable
  • Experience with handheld scanners, frequency devices, and other technology
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Manage workload and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Welcoming and helpful attitude toward guests and team members
  • Effective communication skills
  • Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues
  • Interpret instructions, reports, and information
  • Handle cash register operations as needed
  • Climb ladders and scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely
  • Frequently lift or move merchandise up to 44 pounds without assistance
  • Flexible work schedule (nights, weekends, holidays, closing shifts, and peak shopping times)
  • Reliable and prompt attendance; full-time role without guaranteed 40 hours per week
  • Capability to work in varying temperatures, humidity, and other elements
  • Ability to remain mobile for the duration of a scheduled shift
