General Manager, US

Monumental · United States · 3 days ago

About the role

We're looking for an extremely entrepreneurial operator to serve as our first General Manager outside of Europe. This role requires writing the playbook from scratch—Monumental is completely vertically-integrated, designing and building our own hardware and software, manufacturing robots in-house, and deploying them on construction sites as a subcontractor. You’ll have an extraordinary amount of autonomy, making this an excellent fit if you’ve founded a company before or are seeking an entrepreneurial role with outsized impact.

We are unable to support relocation or sponsorship for this role. Applicants must be based in the US, eligible to work, and willing for frequent travel between the US and the Netherlands. Interviews for this role will begin in September.

Responsibilities

  • Figure out how to go from small construction pilot deployments to ongoing commercial deployments, then scale to multiple concurrent deployments. Act as the initial Deployment Manager in the US to build tacit knowledge before scaling up.
  • Ensure there is always sufficient demand for our product, excelling at sales even if it tends to be low-lift work.
  • Hire, onboard, and manage a local team of robot and deployment operators to operate our robots and handle tasks on construction sites. The US team will be seeded with members from our Dutch team to hit the ground running.
  • Manage our fleet of robots and collaborate with the HQ team to figure out how to manage a remote fleet across the Atlantic.
  • Set up local facilities in the US, from a small office to a potential storage or maintenance hub.
  • Stand up the required legal structure for us to operate and scale in the US, including setting up local entities, navigating state and federal employment law, and other relevant regulations. Comfortably navigate complex questions involving new technology in old industries, liaising with counsel when needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a chaotic, entrepreneurial, high-growth, unstructured environment (e.g., as a startup founder, GM, sales, operations, or business development).
  • A strong bias-to-action and a "getting-shit-done" mentality with tenacity and speed. This role emphasizes execution, not presentations.
  • Ability to context-switch from strategic work to practical tasks throughout the day, with nothing feeling beneath you. Some days may involve hands-on work on a construction site in the morning and interviewing senior candidates in the afternoon.
  • Proven strategic business sense, including experience with sales, pricing, negotiations, and account management. Comfortable being responsible for the P&L of your deployments and the entire US operation.
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging with everyone from billionaire real estate developers to junior tradesmen on construction sites.
  • Experience hiring and managing a team, with a focus on filtering for and instilling the right culture. You’ll be responsible for hiring the initial US team.
  • Raw intellectual horsepower and eagerness to learn. This role has a steep learning curve and may feel like a completely new job every 3-6 months.
  • Willingness for frequent travel within the US and between the US and the Netherlands. Expect to spend significant time in the Netherlands during the first 3-6 months for onboarding and immersion.
  • A child-like excitement and optimism for building the future with robots that construct homes for people.

Benefits

  • Travel and accommodation covered for a few weeks of onboarding at Monumental HQ in Amsterdam, a facility with an in-house workshop and robot testing floor.
  • Opportunity to work onsite five days a week in a company that is not hybrid or remote-first, directly contributing to building robots and construction automation.
  • Chance to make an outsized impact on a problem that matters, working with an experienced founding team backed by a $32M Series B led by Khosla Ventures and Plural.
  • Be part of the founding US team as we expand into the market, with pilots underway and facilities to follow.
