The Hospitality Group manages a portfolio of more than 20 business-class hotels under top brands such as Intercontinental Hotel Groups, Marriott International, Hilton, and Best Western, including The Watermark Hotel, The Hay-Adams Hotel, and Perch Putt. These properties are operated by a team of over 1,000 hospitality professionals.

About the role

The General Manager oversees the daily operations of the Embassy Suites By Hilton Dulles Airport in Herndon, Virginia. This position is responsible for overall hotel management, driving revenue, maximizing profit, and ensuring quality. The role involves effective leadership of assigned staff to achieve financial results, guest satisfaction, and positive team member relations.

Responsibilities

  • Guest Service:
    • Maintains high service and quality standards according to brand, including Quality Assurance Inspections and Guest Satisfaction Surveys.
    • Communicates guest feedback to hotel staff and addresses trends/issues in a timely manner.
    • Sets an example of expected guest service levels and personally follows up on guest inquiries, issues, and concerns.
  • Sales:
    • Actively participates in sales efforts, analyzes and negotiates business, and determines pricing and yield strategies.
    • Attends sales calls, site visits, and community events (e.g., Chamber and CVB meetings) to build client relationships.
    • Maintains accurate weekly, monthly, and annual budgets, forecasts, and business plans in collaboration with the sales team.
    • Works with the Revenue Manager and Sales Team to implement sales strategies and maximize revenue potential.
    • Ensures service and quality needs of negotiated accounts and groups are consistently met.
  • Guest Satisfaction:
    • Identifies obstacles to exemplary service and implements solutions to maximize guest satisfaction scores.
    • Communicates survey results to the hotel team and addresses identified trends.
    • Responds to guest concerns from surveys and maintains scores within brand-acceptable ranges.
  • Financial Responsibility:
    • Manages expenses according to budgeted/forecasted guidelines to maximize profitability.
    • Reviews and releases payroll, ensuring effective labor management.
    • Utilizes the B. F. Saul Company Hospitality Group procurement system and adheres to the approved vendor network.
    • Prepares and manages the hotel budget and ongoing forecasting efforts.
    • Communicates financial forecasts via weekly reporting and critiques month-end results.
    • Shares revenue forecasts with the leadership team to adjust departmental expenses.
    • Reviews Accounts Receivable (A/R) and Accounts Payable (A/P) following company accounting procedures.
    • Manages and maintains company assets to prolong their life and stay within budget guidelines.
  • Training and Development:
    • Assists with ongoing training and development of hotel team members and maintains training records.
    • Ensures new hire training effectively prepares team members for their roles.
    • Analyzes and adjusts current training programs as needed.
    • Implements new company and brand training initiatives in a timely manner.
  • People Management:
    • Effectively interviews, hires, coaches, and develops hotel team members and management.
    • Prepares and conducts annual team member reviews.
    • Addresses performance issues and takes corrective action to hold team members accountable.
    • Motivates staff by setting goals, providing feedback, and recognizing achievements.
    • Addresses areas for improvement identified in the annual Team Member Opinion Survey.
    • Ensures annual team member turnover falls within acceptable guidelines.
  • Self/Workload Management:
    • Manages personal workload and adjusts schedules based on business needs.
    • Provides guidance to hotel team members and leadership to ensure effective workload management.
    • Demonstrates clear written and verbal communication skills.
    • Promotes a productive, professional, and collaborative work environment.
    • Leads daily team meetings and weekly/monthly departmental/hotel meetings.
  • Safety/Risk Management:
    • Leads and participates in monthly Safety Committee Meetings.
    • Conducts routine inspections to maintain standards of the company, brand, and regulatory agencies.
    • Ensures a clean and safe work environment.
    • Handles guest and team member accidents/incidents in a timely manner following company policy.
    • Completes incident reports and follows up within the appropriate time frame.
    • Assists in promoting corporate safety programs and initiatives.

Requirements

  • 3-5+ years of progressive full-service and select-service hotel management experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills across all organizational levels.
  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis.

Pay

$110,000 - $120,000 a year. The actual base pay offered is determined by variables such as qualifications, years of relevant experience, distinctive skills, and level of education attained. Base pay is one component of the total compensation package, which also includes healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, and bonus plans.
