Essential Functions
- Responds to emergencies as assigned, including rescues, explosions and medical emergencies within the area of responsibility and assumes command on the fire ground until relieved by a superior officer.
- May be assigned to assist in the development, supervision and/or implementation of fire service programs, activities or events.
- Manages divisional programs as directed.
- Directs personnel in the implementation of inspection, public education and other programs.
- Affords assistance in the analysis of data regarding fire problems in assigned areas, and makes recommendations for correction.
- Organizes and coordinates all fire station operations which may include fire apparatus, public safety vehicles and fire equipment maintenance.
- Organizes and directs all training at fire company level and implements training programs as directed, including apparatus and equipment and emergency medical care.
- Maintains fire station records systems to include required station log; completes required periodic reports to include employee evaluations, fire incident reports and monthly reports.
- Investigates all fires to determine cause and origin.
- Assists in the evaluation, development, modification and implementation of new or existing programs.
- Acts as a liaison with committees, citizen groups, and the business community; may make presentations to organizations within the community to include schools, civic groups, and neighborhood and community organizations.
Qualification Guidelines
- Education and/or Experience: Five years of fire suppression experience as a municipal firefighter, three of which have been with the Pasadena Fire Department, or regular status appointment as a Pasadena Fire Department Engineer. A valid Class C California Driver's License, and EMT-D Certification are required. Associate of Fire Science Degree or Bachelor of Science Degree in a closely related field is highly desirable. Fire Officer Certification required at time of application.
- Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Knowledge of applicable codes, rules, and regulations of the Pasadena Fire Department; knowledge of modern fire prevention and fire fighting procedures, techniques, and equipment; knowledge of City geography, Incident Command System and City water system; knowledge of physical rescue and emergency medical service; ability to plan, lay out, and direct a variety of fire support, training and prevention operations of a fire company; ability to train and supervise fire personnel; ability to make emergency recognition of hazardous materials problems and institute safe operating procedures; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to learn to use a computer and department approved computer programs; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, and to speak in public to large groups; and ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships in a community living environment and with the public.
- Physical Requirements: Physical strength and agility to lift heavy loads, bend in all directions, climb ladders, and poles, and stairs; squeeze with arms and hands; pull and lower heavy loads; operate machinery using hands and legs; and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
