General Maintenance Worker - Mankato Buildings

Location: Mankato

Full-time, unlimited position within the Transportation Department.

About the role

Under general supervision, this position performs grounds keeping, landscaping, general cleaning, and minor building and furniture repair to provide a clean, comfortable, healthy, and safe environment for all who work in or visit MnDOT owned and maintained buildings, structures, and outdoor areas.

Responsibilities

• Perform lawn mowing and grounds work in the summer and assist with snow removal of the headquarters facility in the winter.
• Complete conference room set up and perform cleaning duties as needed.
• Perform painting, wall repairs, and minor furniture repair.
• Lock up the facility at the end of the day.

Reporting hours: 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM, Monday – Friday.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must have knowledge of:

• Different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents, and equipment.
• Chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents, and soaps sufficient to appropriately select, handle, apply, and dispose of safely.
• Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively, operate safely, and make minor repairs.

Applicants must have the ability to:

• Maintain physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions.
• Follow simple oral and written instructions.
• Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
• Keep simple records.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and application of:

• Basic math (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
• Grounds-keeping and horticultural practices sufficient to properly care for flowers, plants, trees, shrubs, and lawns; recognize plant diseases and pests; and take corrective action for control.

Skills in:

• The use of hand and power tools sufficient to build, construct, and install modular office furniture.
• Servicing basic power, hand tools, and grounds keeping equipment.
• Performing and directing painting and surface preparation of interior and exterior building surfaces.
• Operating lawn maintenance equipment and snow removal equipment.

Additional Requirements

• Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history checks.
• Background investigation prior to employment, which may include:

  • Education/License Verification.

Pay

$20.87 - $25.88 / hourly; $43,576 - $54,037 / annually.
