General Maintenance Worker - Full-time, Night Shift

This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations.

Job Overview

Performs a variety of general maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspection, servicing, repair, overhaul and construction duties in hospital buildings and grounds areas. Carries out tasks within capabilities involving a variety of maintenance crafts such as sheet metal, plumbing and pipe fitting, carpentry, tile setting, painting, electrical and roof maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates, monitors and maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces facilities mechanical components and systems such as electrical equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and plumbing.
  • Performs electrical repairs such as, removal, replacement of switches, ballasts, motors, motor controls, etc.
  • Performs plumbing such as, drains, fixtures, rodding, cleaning, etc., as assigned.
  • Performs minor carpentry such as, the installation and repair of such items as doors, shelving, locks, etc. as needed.
  • Performs repairs to plaster, brickwork or concrete as needed.
  • Solders and welds materials, as needed.
  • Performs service and preventative maintenance on hospital equipment and systems.
  • Repairs patient electrical, mechanical and electrical beds and equipment, as assigned, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Checks all lighting in and around the hospital buildings on a regular basis.
  • Replaces bulbs and/or make necessary repairs to fixtures; repairs various types of electrical circuits and devices, as needed; cleans fixtures on a regular basis.
  • Checks hospital systems for proper function (i.e., electrical power, air handling units, medical gas, steam boiler operation, hot water, etc.).
  • Removes and replaces defective or outdated equipment.
  • Procures necessary parts and materials for jobs.
  • Inspects and repairs safety equipment installed throughout the hospital.
  • Cleans work shop and mechanical equipment.
  • Handles hazardous materials carefully, safety and disposes it properly.
  • Maintains inventory; reorders parts as necessary and keeps storage area neatly organized.
  • Physical Requirements: Frequent bending, squatting, stooping. Occasional lifting heavy weights occasionally. Prolonged standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders. May be exposed to hazards from use of tools and power equipment. Requires fine hand coordination to handle tools and other equipment. Requires ability to hear verbal communication and see written or printed information.
  • Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of general maintenance procedures. Ability to set up and operate various tools and equipment inherent to repair and maintenance of hospital equipment, buildings and grounds. Knowledge of safe use of equipment. Ability to organize and achieve quality performance in new routines, procedures and skills in the function of a maintenance worker. Ability to read blueprints and specifications to determine the procedure of assembling and/or maintaining hospital equipment, buildings and grounds. Basic knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry and painting as it relates to various duties. Ability to exercise independent judgment in times of need and emergency situations.
