General Maintenance Mechanic (Structural Engineering Technician)
About the role
Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings (BAH) is looking for a General Maintenance Mechanic III to provide technical support to our government customer located in Ft. Detrick, Maryland.
Responsibilities
- Performs minor repairs to concrete block walls, gypsum board and fire-retardant panels.
- Ensures application of coating materials by brushing, rolling and spraying, using coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions and by application of coating techniques that ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected, and free from drips and runs.
- Applies epoxy floor coatings for minor repairs, pours wet concrete into forms; spreads and levels; smooths and finishes using trowel and float.
- Lays out work utilizing blueprints or lay-out sketches when provided; determines tools required and estimates necessary materials.

- Performs work in bio-containment suites (BSL-3 and BSL-4) in the presence of highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins and is required to participate in Bio-surety Personnel Reliability System.
- Performs work in animal facilities and is required to be Hepatitis B negative and TB tested every 6 months.
- Qualifies for and remains enrolled in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) in place at USAMRIID in accordance with Department of the Army’s AR 190-17 and local policies and regulations.
- Fulfills safety standards in accordance with the Department of the Army’s DA-PAM 385-69 and (Perpetual).
- Enrolls in Formaldehyde Program for personnel working with formaldehyde or forms of formaldehyde such as paraformaldehyde and formalin per 29 CFR OSHA 1910.1048.
- Performs after-hour, emergency call back, and variable work schedules as required. Response time for call-ins shall be within one hour of notification.
- Performs on-site inspections as assigned, interprets blue prints for accuracy, confirms specifications, conducts visual and measurement testing, reviews operation manuals, maintenance plans and procedures, identifies critical parts, develops operational procedures, standing operating procedures and inputs data into database.
- Documents any discrepancies and reports them back to the TPOC, Facility Management Office, and COR.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- Five plus (5+) years' experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and heating systems.
- Operate and maintain wood-working and sheet metal machinery satisfactorily.
- Must have knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.
- Must have skill in the use of such tools and equipment as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paint brushes, rollers, spray guns, etc.
- Must be able to use such hand tools as hammers, rip and cross-cut saws, chisels, braces and bits, and planes; operates power equipment such as power saws, planers, and jointers.
- Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the work methods, sequences and techniques of cement work.
