General Laborer I works as part of the production team to ensure operational goals are met safely and efficiently. The role involves handling vehicles to produce core and scrap products, assist customers, and meet environmental requirements while upholding company policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Work safely at all times and promote the company’s safety culture; adhere to all safety requirements and wear assigned PPE.
- Remove Freon, power steering fluid, power brake fluid, batteries, excess garbage, and other materials following prescribed procedures.
- Extract gasoline, coolant, waste oil, transfer case oil, catalytic converters, and other fluids and components as directed.
- Position vehicles on wheel stands for customer access to sellable parts; remove vehicles and restore the area afterward.
- Loosen motor and transmission mounts; remove tires and selected core items following procedures.
- Remove heater cores, copper wire, and other designated materials.
- Maintain the crush pad work area to minimize equipment downtime, harvest cores, and ensure environmental compliance.
- Dismantle engines and transmissions; remove small cores, harvest wire, sort commodity materials, and perform related duties.
- Operate the tire machine to separate rubber tires from wheels, remove weights and valve stems, sort tires, and prepare rims for shipment.
- Collect and harvest dismantled core materials, remove debris, and address safety hazards in the customer area.
- Assist customers courteously and professionally; prepare Gaylord boxes and pallets for shipment.
- Complete regulatory and tracking logs; maintain and replace stormwater control devices.
- Inspect and maintain mechanical equipment; perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Conditions
The role operates in an outdoor auto salvage yard with exposure to varying weather, dust, automotive fluids, and machinery noise. A variable schedule including weekends, holidays, and peak sale days is required, along with strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE use.
Requirements
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, including safety messages and hazard communications.
- Ability to work required hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold) for full shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in automotive repair, vehicle dismantling, or operating tools and machinery.
- Familiarity with automotive parts and/or retail customer service.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stretch regularly throughout the shift.
- Manual dexterity for handling tools, operating equipment, and maintaining facility cleanliness.
- Regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Sufficient vision to safely perform all job functions.
