General Laboratory Supervisor

The General Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for managing day-to-day high complexity testing operations, ensuring regulatory compliance to CLIA, staff competency, and accurate result reporting. The role includes monitoring quality control, training personnel, performing competency assessments, and providing technical support to staff. The supervisor may participate in technical operations when trained on processes/methods and must be accessible during testing hours to ensure strict conformance to quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Regulatory Compliance: Maintain and ensure adherence to CLIA requirements, internal quality management systems, and any accreditation body requirements.
• Personnel Management: Develop and oversee personnel training programs, execute required training, and provide basic day-to-day supervision of staff.
• Operational Oversight: Manage daily laboratory workflows based on sample volume and personnel availability, including sample accessioning, inspection, processing, and quality control metrics. Ensure business and quality metrics such as turn-around time and deviations are met.
• Quality Assurance: Participate in the initiation, investigation, root cause analysis, correction, and tracking of non-conforming products. Identify and implement quality metrics for non-conforming product trends. Investigate and address planned and unplanned deviations, CAPAs, and recalls. Compile and present data for management review.
• Technical Support: Act as a liaison for the Laboratory Director, providing on-site, phone, or electronic support during testing.
• Delegated Responsibilities: May include assuring remedial actions for test system deviations, ensuring proper functioning before reporting patient results, providing orientation to testing personnel, and evaluating/documenting personnel competency.

Requirements

• Education: One of the following must be met:
  • Doctoral, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; AND at least 2 years of clinical laboratory training or experience in a high complexity testing environment.
  • Associate’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; AND at least 60 semester hours (or equivalent) that include either:
    • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; OR
    • 24 semester hours of science courses (6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination).
    AND at least 2 years of clinical laboratory training or experience in a high complexity testing environment.
  • Grandfather Provision: Individuals qualified and serving as a general supervisor in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously.
• Experience: 1-3 years in a high-complexity laboratory setting, dependent on degree.

• Environmental: Potential exposure to hazardous materials, including biological fluids, infectious disease, chemical fumes, and oxygen deprivation.

Position Demands

• Technical Expertise: High technical knowledge of internal quality system requirements.
• Accessibility: Must be accessible on-site, by phone, or electronically during testing hours to support technical staff.
• Operational Oversight: Strong operational skills to manage daily laboratory tasks, prioritize workflows, maintain equipment, conduct proficiency testing, and manage staff. Clear communication is required for staff management and presenting laboratory metrics at management reviews.

Pay

Salary range: $85,000 - $105,000 yearly, depending on qualifications and experience.
