General Labor /Forklift Operator

Laborer position involving a variety of tasks in a metals recycling environment. Employees learn new skills on the job, progress to more technical tasks, and work toward greater independence.

Responsibilities

• Operate forklifts and metal processing equipment safely
• Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed
• Sort scrap, metal, and debris in preparation for processing
• Maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors
• Operate metal processing equipment using safe work habits
• Monitor processing operations to detect malfunctions and notify maintenance
• Lift raw materials, finished products, and packed items manually or using hoists
• Load and unload items from machines, conveyors, and conveyances
• Safely clean equipment when jams occur
• Follow all safety procedures (e.g., LOTOTO, Fall Prevention, Fire Prevention)
• Organize materials for effective use of space
• Dispose of waste materials appropriately
• Maintain effective housekeeping for safety and hygiene
• Inspect cleanup completion
• Regular attendance and punctuality

Requirements

• Reliable transportation
• Must pass a medical physical and drug test
• Must pass a background check (and credit check if specified for the position)
• Preferred: High school diploma or GED (or foreign education equivalent)
• Bilingual (English & Spanish) a plus
• Ability to communicate effectively, follow directions (written or oral), and use basic math skills
• Comply with all federal, state, local, and SA Recycling safety, health, and environmental rules

Physical Requirements

• Work in all weather conditions in a scrap metal recycling and shredder yard
• Operate shredders, metal processing equipment, hoists, hydraulic motors, and mechanics tools
• Moderate physical demand level with repetitive motions, gripping, and lifting
• Sensory demands: Hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste
