About the Role

A full-time, exempt position responsible for providing clinical dental services and preventive dental care in a community health center setting. The Staff Dentist supervises dental assistants and dental hygienists in the absence of the Dental Director.

Responsibilities

• Examine individuals requesting care, diagnose dental/oral conditions, prescribe and carry out—or direct others in carrying out—appropriate treatment, or refer individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
• Record patient-dentist transactions in the dental record to accurately reflect the nature of contact, patient condition, and care or treatment provided.
• Complete referrals, data collection instruments, and other required records or paperwork.
• Educate individuals on oral health conditions and promote oral health disease prevention.
• Serve on dental staff and other center committees as assigned.
• Prepare specific reports as requested by the Dental Director.
• Assist in continuing education, on-the-job training, and orientation of community health center staff.
• Design, develop, and implement Dental Department policies, protocols, and procedures in compliance with current professional standards as directed by the Dental Director.
• Provide technical assistance and health education to the community as requested.
• Participate in short and long-term program planning for the Dental Department and the agency, including development of goals and objectives.
• Provide consultation to the Executive Director and Board of Directors on dental and oral health issues in the absence of the Dental Director.
• Travel as necessary to fulfill corporate needs and attend meetings to represent the corporation and/or Dental Department.
• Assist in coordinating and integrating dental programs and services with other corporate programs for patient welfare.
• Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and center rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing dentistry, clinical care, personnel, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
• Participate in recruitment and retention activities as necessary.
• Perform other related and necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals as directed by the Dental Director.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited dental school.
• Completion of an accredited general practice residency program is preferred.
• Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.

Qualifications

• Unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of Ohio (not applicable to commissioned NHSC/PHS officers).
• Current Basic Life Saving certification.
• Ohio DEA registration.
• Medicare and Medicaid provider number.
• Hospital privileges preferred.

Skills

• Ability to gain knowledge of Practice Management System, Microsoft Office Suite, and Accounting software.
• Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges.
