About Turn Turn is a venture-backed, AI-native background screening company built for the realities of high-volume hiring. Our platform, TurnOS, runs FCRA-compliant pre-employment screening and continuous monitoring. It's API-first and embedded directly inside leading HR platforms like BambooHR, so employers can screen where they already hire. Enterprise employers, staffing agencies, and talent platforms across 30+ industries in the U.S. and Canada use Turn to hire quickly without giving up compliance. We're a fully remote team of about 30 people, led by experienced entrepreneurs and working with some of the most recognized names in HR tech. We're small on purpose: everyone here owns real work, ships real things, and sees the impact directly. About the Role We are looking for an exceptional General Counsel to lead Turn's legal and regulatory strategy in the background check industry. This is a foundational leadership role: you will be one of the most senior people at turn.ai, with direct influence over how we manage risk, support growth, and protect the company. You will work closely with the CEO and cross-functional leaders to build the legal framework that supports rapid growth. The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands-on legal leader who translates complex requirements into practical guidance and uses AI and data tools thoughtfully to improve legal workflows and inform decisions. What You Will Own Serve as the company's primary legal resource and General Counsel, managing outside counsel as neededOwn compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), state-specific background screening laws (including ICRAA, Illinois BIPA, and others), and evolving AI/data privacy regulationsReview and negotiate commercial contracts, including client MSAs, data licensing agreements, and vendor agreementsAdvise on employment law, equity, corporate governance, and fundraising legal mattersDevelop and maintain internal compliance programs, policies, and training materialsMonitor the regulatory landscape and proactively communicate risk and opportunity to leadership Who You Are JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdictionYou have 8+ years of legal experience, with meaningful time advising a startup or high-growth companyYou have direct experience with FCRA compliance and the CRA industry, you understand what it means to be a Consumer Reporting Agency, not just in theoryYou use AI and legal technology thoughtfully to improve research, contract review, and legal workflows, with appropriate attention to confidentiality and accuracyYou combine sound legal judgment with data and evidence to assess risk and provide practical, business-minded adviceYou are a builder.
