CMU Health, together with Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw, forms the academic medical center for Central Michigan University College of Medicine. Nearly 75 faculty physicians and about 150 resident physicians deliver care across northern and central Michigan, with locations throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. Role Description

The General Coder is a full-time, remote role responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedural codes for outpatient and inpatient encounters in accordance with current coding guidelines and payer requirements. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing clinical documentation, abstracting relevant medical information, and applying appropriate ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes to support billing, reimbursement, and data integrity. The role involves collaborating with providers and clinical staff to clarify documentation, resolving coding-related queries, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies and regulatory standards. The General Coder also assists in identifying documentation improvement opportunities, participating in internal audits, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of coding rules and healthcare regulations.

Qualifications

  • Live in the state of Michigan
  • Medical coding expertise, including proficiency with ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement practices, payer rules, and compliance regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret clinical documentation, including physician notes, operative reports, and diagnostic findings
  • Attention to detail, accuracy in data entry, and strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clinical and administrative teams
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and coding software; comfort working in a fully remote, technology-driven environment
  • Relevant certification such as CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding credential preferred
  • Prior experience in medical coding or health information management, ideally in an academic or multi-specialty clinical setting
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or training in health information management is beneficial
