About the role

To perform a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in clean, sanitary, and orderly condition and to perform other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Responsibilities

  • High Dusting
    • Using a treated high duster, clean surfaces above shoulder height in a counter-clockwise direction (e.g., lights above doors, curtain tips, vents, ledges).
    • Clean the high duster by gently brushing in a downward direction into the service cart.
  • Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning
    • Using a germicidal solution, sanitize surfaces below shoulder height in a counter-clockwise direction (e.g., ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, trashcans).
    • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls using the proper solution.
    • Spot clean windows as needed.
  • Bathroom Cleaning
    • Wipe down surfaces in the following order using germicidal solution: above and below sink, toilet seat, outside of toilet bowl.
    • Clean the inside of the toilet with a Johnnie Mop and germicidal solution, paying attention to the rim.
    • Clean and check soap dispensers and paper dispensers daily; refill as needed.
  • Empty Trash Cans
    • Remove liners if liquid is present, wipe the trash can, and place a clean liner inside.
  • Floor Dusting or Vacuuming
    • Use a treated dust mophead in an “S” stroke pattern, starting at the back of the room. Dust under all furniture and in restrooms, stopping just inside the door.
    • Clean the mophead with a counter brush, sweeping dust onto a dustpan for disposal.
    • When vacuuming, start at the back of the room and work toward the door, ensuring coverage under chairs and furniture.
  • Grounds Care
    • Clean and check outside areas several times daily:
      • Empty and clean ash urns and trash cans.
      • Police sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash and cigarette butts.
      • Spot clean spills on sidewalks; remove gum with a scraper.
      • Wipe benches, vending machines, and lower window ledges.
      • High dust for cobwebs and clean public area glass as necessary.
      • Police parking lots for trash.
  • Public Common Areas
    • Dust mop and spot mop main hallways.
    • Clean glass several times daily.
    • Clean planters, removing bird waste inside and out.
    • Check for cobwebs and perform high dusting of window areas at least twice per week.
    • Inspect corners and edges for dirt, cobwebs, and debris.
  • Food Court
    • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables; place chairs back under tables.
    • Spot clean spills.
    • Empty and clean trash cans.
    • Remove accumulated dirty trays to the wash room, clean using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays on shelves for reuse.
    • Police outside eating areas.
  • Floor Sanitizing
    • Using the proper germicidal solution, start at the back of the room and mop under furniture and behind doors while backing out.
  • Inspection
    • After completing a room, mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement; make corrections as needed.
  • Daily Tasks
    • Clean halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and perform wall spotting and high dusting.
  • Customer Relations and Service
    • Knock lightly on doors before entering if occupied.
    • Be friendly, cheerful, and courteous to customers; answer questions helpfully or refer them to someone who can.
    • Report anything broken or out of order to your supervisor.
    • Work quietly, minimize noise, and stay in your assigned work area unless directed otherwise by your supervisor.
    • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance while on the job.
    • Report to your supervisor if work is not completed by the end of your shift.
  • Additional Duties
    • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping and waxing floors), carpet extraction and bonneting, auto scrubbing and buffing of floors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic operations of janitorial work.
    • Methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
    • Safe work practices.
    • The use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to:
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Communicate sufficiently with co-workers and supervisors.
    • Operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
    • Interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Walk, stand, or sit for extended periods.
    • Operate powered and non-powered equipment.
    • Lift and carry 1–30 lbs of equipment, supplies, or trash.
    • Push/pull with both hands and arms, exerting 5–35 lbs of force while performing cleaning duties.
    • Climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
    • Bend, twist, and balance at the waist, knees, and neck throughout the shift.
    • Kneel, crouch, or crawl while cleaning lower areas or retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
    • Reach, handle, grasp, and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, and cleaning surfaces.
    • Perform overhead reaching throughout the shift.
    • Use sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.
