Primary Purpose

To perform a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them clean, sanitary and orderly, and to perform other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Essential Responsibilities

  • High Dusting: Using a treated high duster, begin cleaning in a counter‑clockwise direction around the room—high dust surfaces above shoulder height such as lights above doors, curtain tips, vents and ledges. Clean the high duster by gently brushing it downward into the service cart.
  • Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning: Apply a germicidal solution while moving counter‑clockwise, sanitizing surfaces below shoulder height (ledges, chairs, telephone, countertops, trash cans). Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls, and spot‑clean windows.
  • Bathroom Cleaning: Using a germicidal solution, wipe down in order: above and below sink, toilet seat and outside of toilet bowl, interior of toilet with a Johnnie Mop and appropriate solution, paying special attention to the rim. Clean and check soap and paper dispensers daily and refill as needed.
  • Empty Trash Cans: If liquid is present, remove the liner and wipe the can, then place a clean liner.
  • Floor Dusting or Vacuuming: With a treated dust mop head, start at the back of the room using an “S” stroke, dust under all furniture and in restrooms, then clean the mop head with a downward brush stroke and sweep dust into a dustpan. When vacuuming, start at the back and work toward the door, getting under chairs and other furniture.
  • Grounds Care (Outside Areas):
    • Empty and clean ash urns and trash cans.
    • Police sidewalks, flower beds and curb line for trash and cigarette butts; spot‑clean spills, remove gum with a scraper, wipe benches, vending machines, lower window ledges, and high‑dust for dust and cobwebs.
    • Clean public‑area glass as necessary and police the parking lot for trash.
  • Public Common Areas:
    • Dust‑mop and spot‑mop main hallways.
    • Clean glass several times daily.
    • Clean planters, removing bird waste inside and out.
    • Check for cobwebs and perform high dusting of window areas at least twice per week, inspecting corners and edges for debris.
  • Food Court:
    • Clean, remove trash and sanitize tables; return chairs under tables.
    • Spot‑clean spills and empty/clean trash cans.
    • Remove dirty trays to the washroom and clean them with a tray power washer; stack clean trays on a shelf for recycling.
    • Police outside eating areas.
  • Floor Sanitizing: Apply the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and working toward the exit, mopping under furniture and behind doors as you back out.
  • Inspection: After completing a room, mentally review cleaning steps, visually check furniture placement, and make corrections to prevent problems or complaints. Perform daily high dusting and wall spotting in hall, lobby, stairs, water fountains, and furniture areas.
  • Customer Relations and Service:
    • Knock lightly before entering occupied rooms.
    • Be friendly, cheerful, and courteous; answer questions or refer customers as needed.
    • Report broken or out‑of‑order items to the supervisor.
    • Work quietly, minimize noise, and stay in the assigned work area unless directed otherwise.
    • Maintain a clean, neat personal appearance.
    • Report any incomplete assignments at shift end.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: May include floor care such as stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, auto‑scrub and buffing.
