About the role
GEAR UP is a federal grant-funded program to empower first-generation and underrepresented students on their path to college. This position plays a role in shaping futures while working in a supportive, collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide tutoring and targeted academic support to middle school (7-8 grade) students in Math during after-school hours.
- Work with GEAR UP staff, school administration, and teachers to develop and deliver content for tutoring.
- Work with GEAR UP staff to develop and deliver academic workshop content and related materials.
- Support and mentor high school students on the college admission process and applications.
- Assist in the evaluation of GEAR UP operations during the academic year.
- Maintain accurate records on student participation and interactions in the student database system.
- Collaborate with GEAR UP staff and school personnel to foster effective team building and cooperation.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge in Math.
- Grade of B or better in Algebra 1.
- Must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
- Must be willing to travel to Staunton.
- Must pass a background check to work in the school system.

Schedule
Position begins Fall 2026 through end of Spring 2027. Summer hours available. Math tutor will be asked to commit to two or three days a week, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 3-6 PM.
