GEAR - Auto Tech

About the Program

GEAR (Automotive Technology, Transportation, Structural Repair, & Refinishing) is a multi-year automotive technology pathway designed for high school students. The program provides foundational to advanced training in automotive design, engineering, operation, service, repair, and diagnostics.

Course Sequence

• Automotive Technology 1 (Introductory – Freshman or Sophomore Year)

  Provides a foundational understanding of automotive design, engineering, and operation. Emphasis is placed on mechanical concepts, physical principles, and electronic maintenance procedures. Students gain hands-on experience through practical lab activities and consumer-level diagnostic work.

  UC Approval: Elective G

• Automotive Technology 2 (Concentrator)

  Students build advanced knowledge through practical experience in service, repair, and diagnostics. About 80% of the class is spent in the lab performing hands-on work such as computer systems servicing, engine repair, wheel alignment, brake servicing, and body refinishing. The remaining time covers lectures, demonstrations, and theory.

• Advanced Automotive Honors Capstone (Junior/Senior Year)

  This advanced course follows an apprenticeship-style model where students refine technical skills in automotive service, repair, and diagnostics. Students engage in immersive, hands-on laboratory work covering topics such as engine tuning, welding, transmission servicing, drive train repair, and emission systems. Many prepare for state and national automotive competitions.
