Gastrointestinal Oncology Physician

We are recruiting an outstanding clinician specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. The selected applicant will be appointed as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor on the clinical or tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications. This position is part of Huntsman Cancer Institute's strategic priority to provide fully integrated, high-value cancer care across the Intermountain West.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide clinical care and lead clinical or translational research on our main campus, community, and affiliate hospital locations. As part of a growing translational research initiative, the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop clinical research programs.

Responsibilities

• Engage in multidisciplinary teams to advance oncology research and care.
• Contribute to the education and mentoring of fellows, residents, and students.
• Participate in leadership and administrative responsibilities within the Division of Oncology.

Requirements

• Medical Degree (MD or equivalent).
• Board certified in Internal Medicine and eligible for ABIM board certification in Oncology.
• Eligible for a Utah Medical License.

About the Division

The Division of Oncology is one of twelve divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) at the University of Utah. The faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of medical oncology and are dedicated to high-quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation through research. The Division is integrated with the Huntsman Cancer Institute, serving the five-state Mountain West region and beyond.

Clinical activities are supported by 34 physicians and 30 advanced practice clinicians, providing outpatient and inpatient care at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley, including Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah Health’s community clinics. The Division also provides outreach services at affiliate hospitals in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.

Specialty programs include the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship (SOS), Family Cancer Assessment Clinic (FCAC), and Geriatric Oncology Clinic.

Research Opportunities

The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical-trial programs in the DOIM and at Huntsman Cancer Institute, with $20 million in extramural funding in FY24. The Division accounted for 45% of all industry trials, 48% of all investigator-initiated trials (IITs), and 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Research is supported by the Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, and numerous other shared resources. The Utah Population Database offers unique opportunities for population-based genetic research.

Education and Training

The Division is highly committed to education, training clinicians and researchers through programs such as:

• A combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program with 18 fellows.
• MD-PhD and Physician-Scientist Training Programs (PSTP).
• Research training programs like the Vice President’s Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholar Program and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program.
